Welcome to Geology Courses of the BSCG programme under CBCS scheme

Dear Learner,

WELCOME to IGNOU’s Bachelor Degree Programme in Sciences (B.Sc.) under UGC-CBCS scheme!

On behalf of the Geology Discipline Group, I welcome you to the B.Sc. programme. By now you must have received your Enrollment number, identity card and the study materials. We hope that your time with us will be both fulfilling and successful.

The Bachelor Degree Programme in Sciences (B.Sc.) under UGC-CBCS scheme is a 3-year programme during which you will study the courses you have chosen along with Geology. Apart from these core subjects, you will also study skill enhancement courses and compulsory courses in language and environment. You will receive support from IGNOU through the Regional Centre and Study Centre which will be allotted to you and also from IGNOU’s website.

At your study centre, you will be able to avail yourself of the counselling for all the courses. It is not mandatory to attend the counselling session of theory courses but it is necessary to attend all lab sessions for laboratory courses.

You may be studying full-time or you may be employed and studying part-time whilst working. In order to succeed in this programme, you will need to have a positive attitude, patience, self motivation and perseverance. If you are employed, you will be required to have good time management skills because balancing work, home life and study can be quite difficult. Our advice is to work hard towards your goal systematically, don’t leave assignments to the last minute and appear in term-end examinations for a course only when you are sure that you have learnt the subject matter of the course well enough. We would like you to make the most of your time with us, which can be extended up to a maximum of 6 years (i.e. 12 semesters). We would like to provide you all academic support throughout the time you are with us studying the courses and help you to succeed.

The BSCG Programme Guide contains key information about the courses, the assessment methods, the rules and regulations, important forms and the list of Study Centres/Regional Centres of IGNOU. It will help you study and progress in the Programme. So read the Programme Guide carefully before studying the courses, refer to it and let it guide you throughout this phase of your life in IGNOU.

The programme guide is regularly updated as per the changes in University rules and guidelines and updated versions, if any will be uploaded in due course of time. If you feel we have left out any key information in the Programme Guide, please write to us.

Throughout your period of study you will be attached to a Study Centre where:

·        counselling for theory courses will be arranged in which experienced Academic Counsellors will help in resolving your difficulties in learning the courses;

·        practical counselling will be conducted; [The schedule for theory and practical counselling would be intimated to you by the concerned Study Centre. Participating/ Attending theory counselling is optional but attendance for lab courses is compulsory]

·        you can watch TV/video programmes, use the available Library and get other help for your difficulties. Infact, you are required to listen to / watch audio/video programmes developed for the respective courses as these are integrated in the courses and there are questions given based on these A/V programmes. List of these A/V programmes and their web links are given in the self learning materials;

·        you will submit your assignments on time.

·        Apart from the theory counselling being conducted at your respective study centres, it is planned to conduct web (email based) counselling by the Faculty based at Headquarters to give you a way to interact with the course team. The schedule for web counselling is attached. The purpose is the Kindly respond to the counselling sessions and make it interactive.  NOTE THAT THIS IS IN ADDITION TO THE COUNSELLING SESSIONS ALREADY PLANNED / TO BE CONDUCTED AT THE STUDY CENTRES.

Please make sure that you keep a copy of all your communications with the University for your record. Do not forget to write your enrolment number and programme while communicating with IGNOU.
